ABOUT WOODLOES HOMESTEAD

Woodloes was built in 1871 by gentleman-architect Francis Bird, soon after he arrived in the Swan River Colony. He became a partner of the Mason and Bird Timber Company which transported timber from a mill in the Darling Ranges via horse-drawn railway to Mason’s Landing, just downstream of the homestead. The Mason and Bird company ceased operation in 1882 and Bird left the area, taking up residence at the Old Farm at Strawberry Hill in Albany.

The homestead was restored and reopened as a museum in 1978 which now houses a large collection of colonial and post-colonial artefacts that demonstrate daily life from times past. It also contains a small collection of Bird family material and items from historic Canning.
